High School Seniors
The Minnesota AFL-CIO offers five $1,000 scholarships for union members (or dependents of union members) whose union is affiliated with the Minnesota AFL-CIO. The applicant must be a present high school senior, planning to attend post secondary school in the state of Minnesota. The 2012 scholarship form will be posted in January. Labor Leadership Grants The Tobey Lapakko Labor Leadership Grant is available to women who are union members in good standing; the Charles McKenna Leadership Grant is available to men who are union members in good standing. Grants are available for members of affiliated unions seeking to develop their abilities and skills as union leaders. The grants help defray the cost of classes, programs or conferences sponsored or endorsed by the AFL-CIO or affiliated organizations. Recipients will be selected by lot by the Minnesota AFL-CIO Education Committee; grant amounts will be determined by the committee. YOUNG MUSICIANS SCHOLARSHIP FUND GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS
Scholarships are available for young musicians to attend summer music camps/schools. To apply submit a letter of recommendation from a member of Local 30-73 and a teacher, a resume of the young musician, and a copy of the letter of acceptance from the chosen music camp/school. Scholarship applications are reviewed by the Board of the scholarship fund and awarded based on the guidelines outlined above. Deadline for letters of application is May 15, 2012. MINNESOTA SINFONIA YOUNG ARTIST STRING COMPETITION Minnesota Sinfonia’s Young Artist Competition is an annual competition for musicians up to age 21. Held every spring, the contest attracts residents of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin, who compete in a friendly environment. Both the junior and senior division winners are awarded solo appearances with the Sinfonia, and the senior division winner also receives a $500 cash prize. The contest date is Sunday, March 25, 2012, and will be held at the University of Saint Thomas Music Building in Saint Paul. Registration deadline is March 14, 2012.
